JANUARY UPRISING IN THE WIZNA REGION

On the Wizna region during the uprising, the key town was Sieburczyn, where one of the greatest battles in Lomza land took place. It was the only battle won by the insurgents. July 6, 1863. Colonel Józef Konstanty Ramotowski, pseudonym Wawer, commanding a section of insurgents, wanted to cross the river with around 600 insurgents, but was forced to repel the Cossack attacks, which from the early morning hours offensive operations towards insurgent units. To stop the Cossacks, a group of riflemen was assigned, who kept the Cossack cavalry in a manor courtyard in Sieburczyn, until their commanders were killed. Seeing the danger of insurgents crossing the river, Wawer sent the scythesmen, under the command of Wiktor Hłasko to the rescue. The attack of the scythemen led to the destruction of the Cossacks and their withdrawal to Lomza. The victory of the insurgents allowed them a few days' rest in Grądy Woniecko. In the battle of Sieburczyn and in the fields near Sambory, 27 insurgents died, 18 were wounded, 3 of them died in a military facility in Burzyn. Two more lives ended in Grądy Woniecko, where they were buried in the manor courtyard.

The monument to A. Krajewski - the commander of the unit fighting at Sambory, located in the parish cemetery in Wizna - is a permanent proof of the January Uprising in the land of Wizna. It is located in the main avenue - passing the cemetery chapel, we can see it on the right.

On the basis of archival documents, it can be stated that the community of Wizna land participated in the January Uprising and paid a very high price for it. Ludwik Krajewski of Wizna, commanding a small insurgent unit, captured in Wizna, was hanged, and his body was dragged along the streets of the city to deter others from joining the insurgent ranks. Other commonly used repressions include: deportations to Siberia, arrests, executionsand even loss of municipal rights by Wizna.
