MURALS

A mural is a large-format wall art that exists in the urban space to carry a specific message. This is a kind of art called street art. It conveys messages about things that are important to society and to a single person and also about universal values. It allows each person to feed the spirit, completely free of charge. At the same time, it raises the need to talk, comment and express your own opinion about art. The mural is art taken out onto the street.

THE MURALS OF WIZNA

In 2009, during the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II in Strękowa Mountain, members of the Association "Wizna 1939" met with Rafał Roskowiński - an artist from the Gdańsk School of Mural. It was at that time that an idea was born to commemorate the extraordinary history of Wizna, presenting it on large-format wall paintings - murals.

THE FIRST MURAL – 2012.

It was created on the wall of the building at 159 Czarnieckiego Street. This is a mirror image (6x8 cm), which was taken on September 10, 1939 by a German soldier, exactly in the same place where this mural was painted. It presents the soldiers of Cpt. Raginis, taken prisoner after the Battle of Wizna (on November 7-11, 1939), who stopped for a meal on the way to church in Wizna. The creation of this mural has been heard both in the artistic world as well as in local and even global society. Then, a decision was made to present the glorious and dramatic history of Wizna on subsequent murals.

THE SECOND MURAL MAY - 2013.

The idea came from artists from the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław who, in collaboration with artists from the Gdańsk Mural School, created a painting inspired by the paintings of Józef Chełmoński "Krzyż w zadymce" and "Żurawie". It praises the landscape, which surrounds the city of Wizna and the surrounding area, and is symbolized by cranes. Moreover, the cross visible on it commemorates the insurrection activities of 1864, which took place here. The mural was painted on the wall of the bakery building at Paweł from Wizna Street.

THE THIRD MURAL „Monte Cassino” – 2014.

Creation of this mural was initiated by the Association "Wizna 1939". It is a kind of tribute devoted to the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Monte Cassino in which participated a thirty-person group of soldiers from Wizna and the surrounding area. The mural was painted on the walls of the building located at 78 Czarnieckiego Street, which crosses the 1000th-year Street here. From the walls covered with the painting, the faces of men - soldiers, which the artists painted basing on pictures received from their families, look at passers-by. In the background are the famous red poppies.

THE FOURTH MURAL SEPTEMBER 2014.

This is a portrait devoted to the memory of Władysław Raginis - captain of the Border Protection Corps, who commanded the defense of the Wizna section (from 7-11.09.1939), posthumously promoted to major (2012). The smiling captain looks from the great painting that was created on the wall of the building at the intersection of the road Białystok - Łomża with the road Wizna-Jedwabne. Its author is Wojciech Woźniak, who cooperated with Klaudia Szlachecka. The portrait made on the basis of a photo made available by the captain's family is its faithful reflection. The night scenery in which it is portrayed is meant to give the work the impression of a kind of posthumous medallion. A fragment of a letter from March 1942, written by road technician Józef Wiśniowski to Maria, the sister of Major Raginis, in which he informs her about the death of the officer, was also placed on the mural: "Finally, from a civil duty I am reporting: The captain of the Polish Army Raginis fell on the field of glory as a great hero, a knight of great nobility. His body has died, but Spirit and Shadow will live in history and in the local population for everlasting times." The ceremonial unveiling of the portrait took place on the 75th anniversary of the hero's death.

THE FIFTH MURAL „DEPORTATIONS TO THE EAST” – MAY 5, 2015.

It commemorates the deportation to the East of about 150 families in Wadowice (in the years 1940-1941). The initiators of the mural’s creation were descendants of the Dobroński family, whose history has been depicted on it. On the right is a portrait of the family. The mural also depicts a girl who commemorates the mother of Dariusz Szymanowski (president of the Wizna 1939 Association). Through the window, the child watched the parents departing on the cart. The building, on which the mural was created, stands at Cmentarna Street, near the parish cemetery.

THE SIXT MURAL – MAY 2016.

With the mural, the students commemorated the memory of the partisans - soldiers of the Home Army from Wizna. The artists' intention was to present a soldier returning home, who turned towards the Biebrza marshes, wonders whether to return home and agree with the current situation in the country or continue to fight? The birch cross, placed on the left, means certain death that awaits him if he returns to the battlefield. The man has to make a choice ... The mural was created on the wall of the building at 128 Czarnieckiego street, where during the Second World War a German gendarmerie station was located.

THE SEVENTH MURAL – SEPTEMBER 2016.

The last of the murals is devoted to Lieutenant Stanisław Brykalski (posthumously promoted to the rank of captain in 2012), deputy commander of defense of the Wizna section - Captain Raginis. Lieutenant died on September 9, 1939, mortally wounded by a fragment of a bullet.
